Community:
Located on the shore
of Lake Erie, the county has developed into one of Ohios
top recreation areas. Visitors and residence alike can enjoy boating,
swimming, fishing, great restaurants, and the nationally recognized
amusement park Cedar Point. In addition to recreation,
because of its ideal location and outstanding quality of life,
Erie County has, and continues to attract a diversity of quality
business and industry to the area. What follows is a brief description
of Erie County.
Location and
Population:
Erie County is located
in northern Ohio along Lake Erie, sixty (60) miles west of Cleveland
and forty-five (55) miles east of Toledo.
2000 census figures show Erie County with a population of 79,551.
This represents an increase of 2,772 or 3.6% from 1990.
Government:
The county government
operates under a system of three elected commissioners with a
County Administrator as the chief administrative officer. The
majority of the county is zoned and under the guidance of the
Erie County Regional Planning Commission.

Personal Property in Ohio is currently taxed at 25% of fair

Transportation
Facilities:
Norfolk & Southern
and Amtrak provide timely and ample rail services to all of Erie
County. Great Lakes Shipping can be done at the Port of Huron,
cargo and bulk freight can be handled at the Jackson Street Pier
in the City of Sandusky. A number of freight haulers with centrally
located terminals serve the county. Cleveland Hopkins International
Airport is 60 miles east while Toledo Express Airport is 55 miles
west. The Erie/Ottawa Regional Airport with a 5,000 foot runway
serves the area for private and executive planes. Customs service
is located at the Griffing Sandusky Airport.
Highway Facilities:
Two U. S. routes, 6
and 250, as well as Interstate 90/80 service Erie County. In addition,
the following State Routes: 2, 4, 13, 60, 61, 99, 101, 113, and
269 run through the county.
Utilities:
Electric Power
- Electrical distribution is provided by the Ohio Edison Company.
There is adequate power available in the area for any industrial
requirements.
Fuel Gas
Columbia Gas of Ohio Inc. provides natural gas distribution for
the county. Current gas rates and a detailed explanation of them
are available upon request from the company.
Water & Sewer
These services are provided by Erie County. There is ample
capacity available.
Telecommunications - Ameritech and Verizon are the main communications
providers for the area.
Business and Industries:
Erie County has a diversity
of manufacturing in the area that includes Visteon; Delphi Automotive;
Lear Seating; Tenneco; Stein Inc.; FreudenbergNOK; J. H.
Routh Packaging; Lithonia Hi-Tech Inc.; Gliden CompanyICI;
Certainteed Corp.
Labor:
Erie County, during
December of 2001, had a total workforce of 40,900. Of this workforce,
5.3% or 2,200 were looking for work according to the Ohio Department
of Job and Family Services. Existing employers are able to draw
from within a 25-30 mile radius.
Education:
There are eight school
districts within Erie County: Sandusky City, Vermillion Local,
Perkins Local, Margaretta Local, Huron City, Berlin-Milan Local,
Kelly Island Local and EHOVE. These systems collectively serve
over 14,500 students.
Within a one-hour drive
of Erie County there are several colleges, universities and technical
schools. They include: Firelands College; Terra Community College;
Lorain Community College; Tiffin University; Heidelberg College;
Oberlin College; Bowling Green State University; the University
of Toledo; Owens Community College; Ashland College; Case Western
Reserve; Cleveland State; John Carroll University; and Baldwin-Wallace.
Healthcare:
Erie County is served
by Firelands Regional Medical System which is comprised of Firelands
Community Hospital and Providence Hospital; numerous EMT operators
also are in operation. Life Flight is available to Cleveland and
Toledo.
