Community:
Sheffield Village has
a long history of commerce dating back to the time when traders
traveled from Canada across Lake Erie to the Black River at French
Creek where they traded with the Indians. In 1845, attracted by
the location, fertile land and abundance of natural resources,
German settlers came to the area to start a new life. From these
beginnings, Sheffield Village and much of Lorain County have seen
an increase and diversity of commerce.
What follows is a brief prospectus of Sheffield Village.
Location
and Population:
Sheffield Village is
located in Lorain County, approximately 20 miles southwest of
Cleveland.
The 2000 census figures show Lorain County with a population of
284,644, an increase of 3.9% from the 1990 census; and Sheffield
Village with a population of 2,949, an increase of 47.5% from
the 1990 census.
Government:
The Village operates
under a statutory form of government with a Mayor and Village
Council. The Village Council is made up of six elected representatives.
The Village is zoned and is administered by the Village Planning
and Zoning Commission.
PoliceThe Police Department includes 28 full and part-time
officers.
Fire/EMSThe Fire
Department that is certified for, and handles, EMS response includes
28 personnel and eight pieces of equipment. The Ohio Inspection
Rating is 7. The Village is currently being re-evaluated.

Real Property in Ohio is taxed at 35% of fair market value.

Personal Property in Ohio is currently taxed at 25% of fair

Village Income Tax:
The Village of Sheffield currently has a 1% Village Income Tax.
Transportation Facilities:
Norfolk/Southern and
Conrail have active rail facilities serving Lorain County. There
are also 16 different trucking companies that service Sheffield
Village.
Cleveland-Hopkins International Airport is approximately 18 miles
southeast of Sheffield Village. Lorain County Regional Airport
is located 11 miles southwest of the village and has a 5,000 foot
paved runway for private and executive aircraft. Great Lakes shipping
can be accommodated at nearby Lorain Harbor.
The Ohio Turnpike (I-80) is approximately 3 miles south of the
community. I-90 runs along the eastern boundary of the Village
and State Routes 2, 301, 611 and 254 run through he community
Utilities:
Electric Power
- Electrical power is provided by the Ohio Edison Company. There
is adequate power available in the Sheffield Village area for
any type of business requirement.
Fuel Gas
Columbia Gas of Ohio Inc. serves as the distribution system for
Sheffield Village. Current gas rates and supplier information
are available upon request from the company.
Water & Sewer
The water source is Lake Erie. Currently the Village is
purchasing from Avon Lake and distributing water within the community.
Current usage is 490,000 gallons per day. Sewage treatment is
provided through the Village. Current treatment capacity is 7.5
MGD with an average daily treated of 4 MGD.
Telecommunications
- CenturyTel is the provider of communication needs to the community.
Business and
Industries:
Some of the principal industries located in Sheffield Village
are: Standard Pipe, manufacturer of steel pipe coating; Metokote
Plating Co.; Pennsylvania Electric Coil - electric motor repair;
ServiSteel - steel splitting; and Lorain Aluminum Manufacturing
- aluminum doors, windows and siding.
Labor:
Based on The Ohio Department of Job & Family Services, the
available workforce for Lorain County in December 2001 was 145,600
with an unemployment rate of 5.7%. Existing employers are able
to draw from a skilled, highly productive workforce.
Education:
The Sheffield-Sheffield Lake School system provides primary education
in four elementary, one middle and one high school building. Enrollment
during the last five years has averaged 2,685 students. The Lorain
County Joint Vocational School also serves the community. Advanced
education is provided at Lorain Community College located 3 miles
from the French Creek Business Park. Also, Cleveland State University,
Oberlin College, and Baldwin Wallace are all within 25 miles of
Sheffield Village.
Recreation:
The Village owns and operates a 46-acre park in the community.
It is also part of the Metro Park System. There are 10 public
and 4 private golf courses in the area. The Village is within
easy driving distance to many of the cultural activities and professional
sports that are available in Cleveland. Many other recreational
activities are provided by the Villages proximity to Lake
Erie.
Healthcare:
Health care to Sheffield Village is available through Lorain Community
Hospital, St. Joseph Hospital, and Elyria Memorial Hospital. Also,
the world-famous Cleveland Clinic is within 25 miles of the Village.
